fishing-trip.jpgBill Cullerton Sr. has hosted "The Great Outdoors" radio show for many years (Chicago's WGN-AM, Sat. 6-7 AM). He and his sidekick Tony Portincaso probably have taken more than 200 fishing trips to Canada. Here are some of their suggestions for a late thaw-out in Canada.

· Pike fishing should be fantastic for the next few weeks because of the late spring. You will find them in shallow waters, and this is the best time to catch the giants.

· Sometimes the big fish will appear like logs half-submerged on a marl bottom. If you are not sure whether it is a log or a fish, take a few casts. You may be surprised. Pike can appear totally motionless.

.Fish your lures slower than usual early in the season. One of the best lures is the Rapala's Husky-Jerk. This lure has neutral buoyancy; thus, it can be fished slowly at different levels. Trouble is, they are hard to find because of the immense popularity these days.

· If you are fishing lake trout waters and there are still ice floes around, cast a spoon right on the ice and pull it into the open waters. Lake trout of all sizes like to congregate under the ice and are very hungry at this time. Remember: they seek 42 degree (or colder) water temps.

· You will find walleyes in the creeks and small rivers later than usual. This is the time when you may luck out with a real trophy.

· The best time to fish for smallmouth bass is in the afternoon, when the sun has had a chance to warm up the waters somewhat. Shallow, rocky structure is a good place to probe. Also try surface lures. At times, early in the season, big smallmouths will whack topwater lur
