The measure was taken because the Mexican government could not secure the
protection measures for marine turtles
WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES .- United States formally withdrew certification
for shrimp imported from Mexico, which prohibited the importation crustacean for
not having measures of protection for marine turtles during fishing.
The State Department said Thursday in a statement yesterday notified
Congress on the withdrawal of Mexico certification under section 609 of U.S.
Public Law 101-162 USA.
EU import certification Remove shrimp from Mexico | Fishing
The move was expected after a procedure last March 1 United States of
Mexico informed the government that would give the certification, considering
that does not meet the requirements specified in this legislation.
Section 609 prohibits U.S. shrimp import and their derivatives when
fishing for crustaceans kills incidental sea turtle to be caught in the nets
because they lack Turtle Excluder Devices (TED).
The State Department reported that determined together with the National
Marine Fisheries Service that Mexico's TED program no longer meets the required
standards.
After withdrawal of certification, the United States prohibited the
importation of shrimp wild from Mexico from 20 April.
The U.S. authorities have begun to notify importers about the withdrawal
of certification.
The restriction applies to shrimp harvested networks by the Mexican
fishing fleet and not produced in hatcheries.
The government of Mexico has reported that it has launched, together with
the fisheries sector 'decisive action to meet the strict application of the
operation 'of the TED.
