costa-rica_west.jpg Costa Rica's billfishing is considered among the finest in the world. For years anglers have flocked to the beautiful Pacific coast of Costa Rica to challenge a variety of gamefish, from powerful blue and majestic black marlin to acrobatic sailfish. In addition, anglers have found a wide range of smaller species present, making this a light-tackle paradise as well. Wahoo, roosterfish, dolphin, amberjack, tuna, cubera snapper and a host of others can be caught here.

A number of facilities offer excellent accommodations and experienced boat crews, along with modern fleets of sportfishing boats. The splendid El Ocotal resort and the Marlin Azul fleet (working out of Flamingo during the summer) should be considered.

El Ocotal is one of the premier light tackle and billfishing locations in the world. Sails are thickest June through the fall. Both blue and black marlin of over 700 pounds have been boated here. A large variety of light-tackle gamefish will appeal to fishermen who aren't interested in billfish. El Ocotal is located on a bluff overlooking the ocean, with a small, private beach below. Its grounds include the main resort with dining and lounge facilities, as well as a swimming pool...first-class accommodations including air conditioning, phones and tv in private rooms, scrumptious meals and an active, attentive staff. It's a super place and reasonably priced, too.
