Cochrane functions as an outfitting center for hunting, fishing,
snowmobiling and nature excursions into the northern wilderness and
Hudson Bay region. Railways have played a dominant role in developing
Cochrane, which is also an agricultural, forestry, and tourism centre.
Born in 1908 as a major rail junction, the town is the southern
terminal of the Polar Bear Express. From late June to Labor Day, this
train makes daily 300km runs north to Moosonee. A museum across from
the railway station has a vintage locomotive and rolling stock, and a
memorial to Tim Horton (1930-74), Cochrane born star hockey player and
donut shop franchiser, who died in an automobile accident.
