The Kola peninsula in western Russia offers what many would argue is the world's finest Atlantic Salmon fishing. Rivers like the Umba host two or three major runs of Atlantics during their long summer, and offer weekly opportunities to have salmon action like no other spot in the world. Catch statistics are impressive: most weeks provide over 20 salmon per angler landed, and many weeks the figure is almost double. Obviously, success is coupled with a bit of luck and experience, but because of the high numbers of salmon, even newcomers to salmon fishing can score. The Umba also boasts a high percentage of adult salmon, with grilse in the minority most of the summer. Eight- to 12-pound fish are commonplace and many fish over the 20-pound mark are landed throughout the season, including several that top 30 or occasionally even 40 pounds. The Minipi watershed was discovered decades ago by angling pioneer Lee Wulff. Realizing the fragile nature of this region, he kept his discovery secret until he could line up outfitters who would faithfully pledge to run their operations on a strict catch and release basis. Now, many years later, this fishery, because of proper management, remains productive. Brook trout run two to four pounds on the average, with many in the five- to seven-pound range. There is the possibility of an eight pounder. It's quality, rather than quantity fishing.
Brabant Lodge is located in the Northwest Territories on the Mackenzie River where it exits Great Slave Lake. From its strategic location, Brabant guests have access to miles and miles of superb northern pike waters. Every year The PanAngler ranks it as one of Canada's Six Best Pike Waters. Pike will average 6 to 12 pounds, but adept anglers will scrimmage with several pike in the 15- to 18-pound range possibly every day. Pike of over 20 pounds are taken throughout the summer season.
